Skripsi Improving the Students Reading Comprehension in Narrative Text

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
A.  Background
          Language teaching, especially foreign languages is not an easy task. In Indonesian, English is a foreign language which always makes students confused when being studied.The cause is the students’ environment in achieving their first language and a foreign language are different.Thus, it takes the hard work of teachers in creating a conducive learning process in the classroom.
          English as a subject matter in school covers the four basic language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. In every subject, student’s learning activities involve reading. Sujana in Argarini (2010) notes that reading ability can influence  the level of students’competence in any subject. Brown (2001; 264) states “reading is a process interrelated with thinking and with other communication abilities listening, speaking, and writing. Therefore, it is undeniable that reading is one of important activities of learning process.


          Based on preliminary observation, the writer found that some English teachers still use traditional or conventional method to teach reading. Conventional method usually makes students bored because the method is monotonous, and the students are not active, so it makes the learners get bored. One of the ways to make the teaching reading effective is making the students active, so they enjoy learning and they can improve their reading skillGrabe and Stoller (2009).
          In order, to make students active, the method should be interesting and studentcentered. One of the method is cooperative learning. Cooperative learning as learning system which gives students response to cooperate each other in structured assignments and in this term, the teacher is as a facilitator. Through this method, students are active in the learning process, because they will learn more through a process of constructing and creating, working in group and sharing knowledge. The students also can learn by two main resources, the teacher and their peer as well.(Lie in Argarini (2010)).
Cooperative learning has several types namely Group Investigation (GI), Students Teams Achievement Divisions (STAD), Teams-Games-Tournament (TGT), Team Assisted Individualized (TAI) and Jigsaw (Kagan, 2009: 441). One of the interesting method is Group investigation.
            Group investigation is an organizational approach  that allows a class to work actively and collaboratively in smallgroups and enables students to take an active role in determining their own learning goals and processes (Kagan, 2009). Group investigation method requires the students to form small interest groups, plan and implement their investigation, synthesize the group members’ findings, and make a presentation to the entire class (Sharan, 1990).
            Therefore, the writer wants to take the research about Improving the Students’ Reading Comprehension in Narrative Textthrough Group Investigation Method (a Class Action Research at SMP Negeri 7 Bulukumba ).


B. Problem Statement
            Based on the description above, the researcher formulates the research problem as follows; “How is the implementation of group investigation method to improve the students’ reading comprehension in narrative textat the third year students of SMP Negeri 7 Bulukumba ?.”
C. Research Objective
The main objective of this research is to describe the implementation of group investigation method to improve the students’ reading comprehensionin narrative text at the third year students of SMP Negeri 7 Bulukumba.
D. Research Significance
The writer hopes that after this study has been completed, it will give some significance values. The significance values are as follows:
1.        The process of this research will be useful for the students to improve their
reading comprehension and develop their study in order to be successful.
2.      It will give experience and clear understanding to the readers about the process of teaching reading using cooperative method especially group investigation.
3.   The result of this study will give contribution to English teacher and can be areference to improve his performance and competence in teaching English.

E.  Research Scope

The scope of this research focuses on the improving students’ reading comprehension in narrative text through group investigation method at the third year students of SMP Negeri 7 Bulukumba in 2015/2016 Academic year.
